Sustainability Through Inclusivity: Crafting A Future for All

By Madera E. Rogers-Henry

It is a journey that started nearly fifteen years ago, a path to sustainable living that has taken me from the bustling streets of New York to the serene landscapes of Colorado and now to the vibrant city of New Orleans. Along the way, I have come to realize that in many instances, the tables where discussions around sustainability and recycling take place are starkly lacking in diversity.

The fields of sustainability and recycling are often dominated by white or European voices, leaving men and women of color severely underrepresented. It is a disheartening disconnect - a dissonance between caring for the planet and including voices that have long been marginalized in these conversations. Even as crafting, particularly utilizing recycled materials, gains acceptance, there remains a stigma, a sense of otherness that permeates, even within my own community.

But one cannot shy away from uncomfortable truths or ignore the elephant in the room. It is clear to me that true environmental work cannot progress without addressing social injustices and disparities. The very foundation of sustainability, the essence of recycling and repurposing, lies in inclusivity and equity. Through the circular economy, I consciously strive to not only involve those on the forefront but also uplift those who have been forgotten or excluded.

Crafting, for me, is not just about creating beautiful products from recycled materials; it is about dismantling barriers, challenging norms, and fostering a sense of belonging for all. It is about shining a light on the voices and stories that have long been silenced, about creating a space where diversity is not just welcomed but celebrated.

As we tread this path towards a more sustainable future, let us remember that true progress lies in unity, in recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental issues and social justice. We cannot truly heal the planet without healing the wounds of inequality and exclusion that run deep in our society.

In every stitch, in every creation, in every paper pattern we create, our hands are united to honor the earth and all its inhabitants. May we celebrate one another in joy! Let us commit to building a future where everyone, regardless of race, background, or identity, has a seat at the table. Let us craft a world where sustainability is synonymous with inclusivity, where recycling is not just about materials but about uplifting communities and empowering voices that have long been silenced.

Together, let us weave a tapestry of change, of hope, and of a future where all can thrive.
